TOWARDS THE HUNG KINGS’ COMMEMORATION DAY ON MARCH 10th, THE YEAR OF THE CAT 2023

In the historical process of building and defending the country, the Vietnamese people, for generations, have formed in their minds that Hung King is the founder who built the country and is the ancestor of the Vietnamese nation. Therefore, the Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day is celebrated for the whole nation to remember and show their gratitude to the ancestors who had the merit of giving birth to the race, opening up the territory, and creating the shape of the country.

The Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day and the Hung Temple has long been a symbol of deep spiritualization among Vietnamese. This is the convergence of spirit, cultural identity, and national unity. It is a source of spiritual power, helping the Vietnamese to overcome all obstacles and challenges and to unite to win all natural disasters and enemies.


From this special and very human point of view, the belief in the Hung King worship was officially listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an intangible cultural heritage representing for human on December 6th, 2012.More than ten years after being listed by UNESCO, the power of the King worshipis being promoted at the present and in the future, which is the original strength of bringing together Vietnamese generations, from all over the country including the overseas  to contribute to buid  and defend the country.  


Belief in the Hung Kings worship originates from the ancestor worship, one of the particular believes playing a special role in spiritual life and is one of the factors forming cultural identity of the Vietnamese people.Through many historical events, Vietnamese ancestors worship have always a sacred position in the people’s spiritual life.; It has been preserved and passed down for many generations, isspread widely in the social community, and exists in all political institutions.


The Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day has been existed in the hearts of Vietnamese people. Genealogy book of the Hung Kings (1470) written: "From the Din, Le, Ly, and Tran dynasties to our present dynasty, Hau Le (1418–1527) still offers in the templeTrung Nghia village (Fairy Village at present). Here, people from all over the country gather to worship and commemorate the sacred ancestors’ merits".


The Nguyen dynasty continued to honor the Hung Kings through the policy of national unity, appointing localities to enumerate stories of the god and practise the procession of the ancestral tablet of the Hung Temple to worship in the Great Emperor Temple in Hue Citadel. At the same time, the court provided money for the repair and decoration of temples such as the Upper Temple, Middle Temple, Lower Temple, Gieng Temple, etc. The Kings of Nguyen dynasty, as a general rule, every five years (in round and even years), celeberated the Commemoration Day (National Holiday) at the Hung Temple while it was celeberated by the locality in odd years. , In the second year of Khai Dinh (1917), the Mandarin Le Trung Ngoc asked the Ministry of Rites "to fix the National Holiday on March 10th of lunar year as the national day for the whole Vietnamese country to celeberate the Hung King offering ceremony ". Since then, the March 10th  Ancestor Commemoration Day has become the National Ancestor Commemoration Day of the whole country and it has entered popularly poetry:


 “Whoever goes back and forth

Remember the Ancestor Commemoration Day of March 10th"


After the August Revolution in 1945, our Party and State were very interested in the Hung Temple, Ho Chi Minh President and the leaders of the Party and the State visited here. Succeeded the noble tradition and the ethics of "When drinking water, thinking of its source" of the ancestors, only after the successful August Revolution, Ho Chi Minh President signed the "Decree of the President No. 22/SL dated on February 18th, 1946", for "The employees who were day-laborers at public offices have their rights to receive a salary" on The Hung Kings' Commemoration Day.

 

The Hung Kings' Commemoration Day in the Binh Tuat year (1946) - the first year of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Mr. Huynh Thuc Khang - the Temporary President offered a map of the Vietnamese Fatherland and a precious sword to report to the ancestors about the invaded country and pray to the ancestors to bless the nation and the people living inpeace and unite to, defeat the invaders and protect the country's territorial integrity. 


Decree No.145/2013/ND-CP dated on October 29th, 2013, of the Government on Regulating the organization of anniversaries; ceremonies of receiving forms of commendation andemulation title; external ceremonies, and welcoming foreign guests, including specific regulations on the scale of the annual organization of the Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day on   March 10th of the lunar calendar.


The Hung Kings' Commemoration Day has a profound meaning in the cultural and spiritual life of the community. From the center of worshiping the Hung Kings on Nghia Linh Mountain to the worshiping monuments of the Hung King, famous people and generals of the Hung Kings period in the country and abroad simultaneously held The Hung Kings' Commemoration Day on March 10th of lunar year seriously and respectfully, which is deep educationally meaningful for national consciousness and love for the motherland and country. The Hung Kings' Temple Festival in the Hung Kings Worship has reached the peak of sublimation to become a festival of the whole people.


In Dak Lak, in 2010, after holding a delegation to came to Phu Tho province to plea for "Land, Water, Incense Foot from the Hung Temple" to worship at Lac Giao Communal House. Since then, every year on March 10th of  lunar year, at Lac Giao National Historic Site,  Dak Lak Province celebrates the c ceremony to offer incense, flowers and presents to the National Ancestor Hung King to encourage and call on the solidarity spirit of all people' classes to enthusiastically emulate and successfully implement the tasks and goals of economic, cultural and social development, building a Dak Lak province having civilization, beauty and cultural identity, worthy of the central position of the Central Highlands.


This year, The Hung Kings' Commemoration Day is held from April 28th to 29th, 2023 (March 9th and 10th of the year Quy Mao), including:

The Ceremony before the Death Anniversary: From 14p.m on April 28th, 2023 (on March 9th of the year Quy Mao).

Ceremony to offer incense, flowers and items to the National Ancestor Hung King: From 07:30 a.m, April 29th, 2023 (on March 10th of the year Quy Mao).

Location: Lac Giao Communal House National Historical Site, 67 Phan Boi Chau Street, Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak.
