Workshop on "Preservation of traditional musical heritage of ethnic peoples in the Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands - Policies and Practice"

Vietnamese Institute of Musicology in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dak Lak, on 10th April at the Dak Lak Museum, organized a scientific workshop entitled "Preservation of traditional musical heritage of ethnic peoples in the Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands - Policies and Practice".

The workshop is an activity within the framework of the implementation of the National Research Project: "Urgent solutions to preserve and promote values of traditional musical heritage in cultural life of ethnic minorities in Vietnam "conducted by Vietnamese Institute of Musicology during June 2017 and November 2019. Attending the workshop were Mr. Y Won Bkrong - Vice Chairman of Dak Lak Ethnic Minorities Committee, representatives of Dak Lak Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Dak Lak Museum, Dance and Song Ensemble of Ethnic Peoples, Association of Literature and Art of Gia Lai and Lam Dong, Dak Lak College of Culture and Arts, artisans and researchers. Presenting the workshop report, Assoc. Prof. Ph.D Nguyen Binh Dinh, Vietnamese Institute of Musicology pointed out subjective and objective causes leading to difficulties in preserving and promoting the values of traditional musical heritage in the cultural life of the ethnic peoples in Vietnam. At present, penetration of exotic music types make the music of our nation in genera and the traditional music of the peoples in particular are being narrow in terms of performance space, performance opportunities and audiences. At present, there are only a few ethnic teenagers in the Central and the Central Highlands who can sing folk songs and play musical instruments of their ethnic groups. The artisans who are good at crafting and folk music types and who can create, perform and teach traditional musical instruments are becoming less and less. Therefore, the workshop on "Preservation of traditional musical heritage of ethnic minorities in the Central and the Central Highlands - Policies and Practice" aimed to carry out a comprehensive investigation and survey of the implementation of relevant policies and guidelines in the preservation and promotion of the values of traditional musical heritage ​​of the ethnic peoples in Vietnam. The workshop has received special attention from artisans, musicians, musical and cultural researchers having more than eight presentations. The researchers and delegates focused on the following issues: Appearance, characteristics and values ​​of culture, society and art of the traditional musical heritage of the ethnic peoples in the Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands; The role and position of the traditional musical heritage in the cultural life of the ethnic peoples in the Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands; The real situation of preserving the traditional musical heritage and the results of the implementation of the policies of preserving and promoting the musical heritages of the ethnic peoples in the Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands. At the same time, the delegates also proposed solutions to preserve and promote the values of the traditional musical heritage of the ethnic peoples in the Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.
